Assistant Teacher Job Description
A. Scope
Implement those parts of the program assigned to him/her and carry out the daily program in prescribed areas under the supervision of the lead teacher.
B. Job Responsibilities
*Establishes a positive Christian learning environment with regard to the needs of each child.
1. Assist with the teaching and planning in areas of the program as delegated by the lead teacher following the goals and objectives set by the group.
2. Assist in preparing new and interesting educational materials appropriate for children in the class. (Interest centers, games, etc.)
3. Provide daily activities to develop a positive self-concept and Christian faith for each child.
4. Communicate observations of classroom functions and individual child’s development to the teacher.
5. Relay communication between parents and teacher and/or director.
6. Make use of Center resources and outside resources.
7. Interact with, initiate and encourage the children in activities during the day.
8. Participate in weekly curriculum planning meetings, sharing ideas, and skills.
9. Maintain a healthy and safe physical environment by keeping space clean, organized, and attractive.
10. Attend and participate in all parent events.
11. Work with the team to develop a consistent and successful program.
12. Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the Center manual (health and safety, staff handbook, personnel).
13. Be a positive model for children, parents, and staff.
14. Assist with daily living tasks such as bathroom breaks, snack/meal times, and nap time.
15. Share responsibility for kitchen duties, housekeeping duties, outdoor play periods and general maintenance of building and grounds.
16. Take responsibility for group in teacher’s absence.
17. Supervise and manage group of children in room as called upon to do so.
18. Allow children age-appropriate independence.
19. Use appropriate and suitable language with the children and when children are present.
20. Follow guidelines set by the Behavior/Guidance Plan.
21. Exhibit good caregiving skills.
22. Keep matters about children and families confidential.
23. Complete the appropriate number of hours of in-service training annually.
24. Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate.
25. Exhibit confidence in a crisis situation.
26. Assume other assigned duties relevant to the needs of the program.
C. Qualifications
The person selected for this position must meet the requirements set by the DHS Rule 3 for the State of Minnesota. Since the Department of Human Services requires that persons working with young children be emotionally, intellectually, and physically healthy, the assistant teacher must be able to see, hear, think and move quickly enough to supervise the children safely. The assistant teacher must also be able to lift and carry children and to provide an appropriate speech model with interacting with both children and parents. This person must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the ECC’s philosophy. The assistant teacher must participate in an orientation program and pass the Applicant Back ground Study processed by the Department of Human Services.
